Design
Both cameras produce similar results and have similar specifications. And, discovering that they’re both made by the same company, the confusion grows even more.
The Insta360 One R is a modular camera, which is the most significant difference. As a result, a 360-degree camera isn’t always necessary. That makes it more flexible, but it also makes it a little more difficult to use, and the Insta360 One X2 might be a better option in some cases.
Let’s get a little more descriptive. The tripod mount on the Insta360 One X2 eliminates the need to worry about the camera tilting down or up.
If you’re looking for something modular, the Insta360 One R is the way to go. You just order the module in case the 360 camera is destroyed, or the core, for example. The Insta360 One R faces a challenge in the form of a tripod mount and quick battery access. You also get a spare 4K Wide-angle lens with the Twin Edition, and you can order another module if you need the One-inch Edition with Leica lens. This camera has a lot of options.
For the moto vloggers
Yes, you guys. You have a special place in my heart… That’s because I am also into it after watching lots of the moto vlogs of MoTour, truepa Motodeck and RedSweetPotato.
If you don’t already know, I am a member of the Insta360 Users Philippines 🇵🇭 Facebook Group. This group has helped me a lot when I was shopping for my first Insta360 camera. Shoutout to the admins and affiliate members of this group!
Now for the moto vloggers.
Both the 360 cameras can be your moto vlogging camera depending on how you want to mount it in your bike.
My favorite mount is on my Yamana Nmax 155 ABS’s crash guard. When mounted, it resembles a unicorn, but I like how it records my video as if I were in front of a camera.
You get the idea.
Here’s an example of a vlog I made for it.
But the only issue I have with this setup is, it is useless on high-speed documentation. More on that on a separate topic.
I bought the Insta360 One R because I believe I can use the 4K wide-angle lens to install it on the chin of my helmet like the GoPro. The 4K wide-angle camera, on the other hand, has been gathering dust in the box since I configured my One R.
As a result, I’m considering selling the entire Insta360 One R, including all of the accessories I’ve already purchased, in exchange for an Insta360 One X2. That’s because I’ve noticed that I’m mostly shooting 360-degree images.
The famous chin mount is not compatible with the Insta360 One X2. Your eyesight would be obstructed.
Other stuff to consider
For content creators, recording 360-degree footage is a completely new experience. Especially with the Insta360 cameras, which allow you to aim the camera anywhere without regard for the horizon. The magic occurs in post-production, as you reframe all of the shots to your preference.
But the Insta360 camera is NOT the only investment you will make.
You need to buy additional accessories like the invisible stick, mounts, lens guards, and the compatible MicroSD card. Yes, don’t buy those cheap or generic microSD cards because it will be a total headache.

Next is your post-processing device. Yes, you can’t just use the recorded video outright. You need to post-process it. Aided by the FREE downloadable app (Insta360 Studio for PC & Insta360 for mobile), you need a relatively high-spec’d PC.. Like it should have at least 8GB RAM. And for the phone for mobile editing, you should have a midrange smartphone with at least 8GB of RAM as well.

And oh, I’d like to mention that there are two (2) files for every video recording. That’s because of the 2 lenses recording at the same time.

Conclusion
Should it be the Insta360 One R or the Insta360 One X2?
Here are my thoughts.
If you want to replace the battery on the Insta360 One R, be prepared to disassemble the whole assembly. The battery is easily accessible on the Insta360 One X2. Additionally, if you want the Twin Edition, the 4K wide-angle lens can only be used to capture GoPro-style images. You also have the ability to purchase or upgrade to other modules, such as the One-inch Edition. And, in the event that one of the modular parts is damaged, you just need to replace that component.
If you prefer the Insta360 One X2, the former has a few advantages. The first benefit, and my personal preference, is the ease with which batteries can be replaced. As a moto vlogger, I want this feature so that I can quickly and easily replace the battery. The tripod mount is the second choice. The One R comes with a cage with a GoPro-style mount, which means it can tip down or up at any time if not securely fastened.
Lastly, the Insta360 One X2 is the one that is truly pocketable. Believe it or not.
