In the Philippines, Internet has become a necessity already, as more and more companies build their business and reputation online. In 2011 both telcos in PH – Smart Communications and Globe Telecoms upgraded its infrastructures to what is called LTE (Long Term Evolution). In this infrastructure, Internet speed is really fast at more than 100Mbs (LTE-A). They first powered up LTE – up to 42Mbps Internet speed in major cities of the country.
Recently, a report became viral in the social media when Internet speed were compared in the ASEAN countries. The Philippines was at the bottom among 14 countries in the region. In the report, PH was only having an average of 3.6Mbps. It wasn’t clear though what Internet infrastructure they tested, only an inforgraphic was presented. A lot of information is missing in the report.
We got intrigued by that report by ASEAN DNA. Primarily because, I myself is a user of LTE of both telcos here in the Philippines. At our home office, we are using a wired broadband service that is up to 5Mbps – our regular speed is at 4.5Mbps.
We Googled and tried to find a detailed Internet report and we found Akamai State of Internet Report for the last quarter of 2013. In the table above, PH is 36th in global ranking (not only ASEAN countries), and you can see that the Q4 2013 peak speed is 32.6Mbs. We are far better than Malaysia, New Zealand, Vietnam and Indonesia.
The Philippines, is one of the top four gainers in 2014 with a 42% average connection speed. Also, it is noteworthy to mention that the peak speed in the PH grew 144% since 2013 which shows that despite not being backed up by the Government (because SG is enjoying a subsidized infrastructures and maintenance) PH Internet speed has improved a lot.
