There is an academe-industry partnership that has been around for 10 years now. Spearheaded by Smart Communications, SWEEP hold anual contest for colleges that offers BS ECE (Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering) where students had to group themselves and prepare for interesting mix of inventions.
This year from 120 contenders nationswide, they now arrived to the Top 10 Finalists and some of the interesting inventions presented includes a GPS-equipped helmet, a localized dieting assistant, and an automatic traffic density app, all of these were developed by ECE students from SWEEP partner schools nationwide.
Participating colleges who made it to the Top 10 includes Ateneo de Manila University, Bulacan State University, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, De La Salle Lipa, Notre Dame of Marbel University, Tarlac State Univesity, and University of SouthEastern Philippines.
Ten technology inventions includes (1) Botika-on-the-Go app, a mobile app that integrates medical information, inventory and medical acquisition assistance. (2) LowCal, a diet planner and food tracker rolled into one. (3) Leptos Detector app, this one allows early detection of the Leptospira bacteria in human blod sample through image procesing. (4) SMS.A WT, Switching and monitoring system using Android in Wireless Technoly, an app that monitors electrical appliances and lights at home. (5) Automatic Detection of Traffic Density – the app allows users to monitor real-time traffic situation in a certain location via image processing. (6) Fly Smart will let users book and purchase flights from airlines anytime. (7) Smart Head (Helmet Engineered for Accidents and Disasters), facilitates faster rescue of victims of motorcycle accidents via GPS. It reports updates of victim’s vital signs to the nearest relative, police or hospital via SMS. (8) Systematic Market App for real-time trading allows users to buy groceries via mobile phones. (9) Doc Banana, a digital image processing approach for early banana disease detection. (10) Wordify, for travellers to countries that does not speak English, this one will definitely help you. It translates any language into English.
We have witnessed the inventions at the 33rd floor of Smart Tower today. Out of the 10 entries, I guess the entries of Colegio de San Juan de Letran (SMS.A WT), and the Smart HEAD by Tarlac State University will be neck to neck to the championship.
First prize will take home P500,000, P200,000 to the second place and P100,000 to the third placer. Same amount goes to the school they represent.
