Western Digital My Book HDD 4TB Review

If your SOHO (Small Office/Home Office) need few more storage for your archives, files transmitted from branch office, perhaps photos, music files, you might consider a 4 tera byte external hard disk drive from Western Digital.

My Book HDD 4TB comes with a separate power cord, and a USB 3.0 cable for your fast file transfer. It does’t look like a current design since the external hard drive is housed on a plastic casing that looks like a typical desktop hard drive, only that it can be moved to different locations and be attached to any PC or server to serve the purpose.

When you don’t need the service of the external drive, typical situations like weekends or after office when everybody is gone, you can turn off the drive with its dedicated power button at the back. You can also purchase an Kensington lock for added protection, or the bad guys in your office can take it home including your precious data with it.

File transfer speed.
A 20G of files can be transferred within 2 minutes. That’s how fast this 4TB external drive can transfer your files. But take note, that I transferred that files with my Mac with USB 3.0 port. It would have been a different story if I transferred from a USB 2.0 port.

I also did a speed test using Mac’s Black MagicDesign Speed test app. The result of both write and read are almost identical, the test used a 1G file transfer stress test. The result wasn’t perfect as you can see, it reported that it cannot support a 720p video format, but passed both 1080P tests.

The external drive is well ventilated, top and bottom including the back portion as vents so that air comes in and out easily preventing over heat to the drive.  The negative feature of the vents – it will collect lots of dust overtime. There is no mounting kit, so you should find a good spot in your data center and just let it stand there like a book.

If you’re looking for portability on your back up files, the My Book 4TB is not something for you. But basic task like back up and huge storage with fast file transfer rate, the MyBook 4TB does the job well.

The back up software the WD SmartWare provided was not used for this review since we use Mac.

Verdict.
My Book HDD 4TB is available in Abacus stores and in Villman nationwide. It has been there for since for a long time now, Villman sells it for P9,288. Price is reasonable as the Seagate Expansion 4TB 3.5 Ext HDD is priced at P8,999 at Villman.

Recommended for SOHO, small offices, production houses, for photographers that works on desktop PCs. This will be perfect back up and extra storage as well.

What we like
– Fast file transfer
– Silent, thanks to its fanless feature
– Huge capacity

What we did not like
– Bulky
