Acer M220 Launch and Initial Review

When I hear the word “smartphone”, usually the word “expensive” pops to my mind. However, Acer recently released the sizzling Liquid M220 at the K-Pub BBQ in Trinoma (pun intended). It is an affordable (read: not cheap!) and all purpose Windows smart phone that caters to anyone and everyone.

The Acer M220, a 4-inch phone, powered by a 1.2GHz dual core processor, 512 MB of RAM, 4GB internal memory, with a microSD slot that supports up to 32GB, voice activated 5MP and 2MP cameras, dual SIM capabilities, and 1,300mAH battery.

It is running Windows 8.1 as an OS (with a promise for an update to Windows 10 by the end of the year), the M220 is the perfect entry level phone for those who are curious about Windows phones for a low price of only P2,490.

Unboxing the Acer M220

Inside the box were the usual suspects: a wall charger and micro USB wire, a pair of headphones with a built in mic, the detachable battery, the warranty and the instructions booklet, and the M220 unit itself.

The unit itself had a textile finish, which doubles as an increased grip on the phone, especially when partnered with specialized band around the phone. This ensures that you won’t easily drop this phone despite its small size.

My first impressions on Acer M220

Features that goes beyond “Not Bad!”

The interface may seem confusing at first, but after getting used to it, the phone can stand on par with Android phones on the market. With Facebook and Skype pre-installed, and other apps like Twitter and Instagram available on the Windows Store, transition to a Windows phone becomes easier.

It’s Literally A Mini Computer

The phone has Windows Office installed, which allows the user to carry around and work on Word documents and Powerpoint presentations, among other things. As soon as Windows launches Continuum in the near future, it will even allow the M220 to be connected to a wireless keyboards, mouse, and monitor, giving users a computer like experience at the palm of their hands.

“Cortana, tell me a joke.”

“Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.”

That’s Cortana, Window’s AI Personal Assistant that comes pre-installed on the M220. Alongside setting appointments, searching for restaurants, and typing your messages, Cortana can even humor you when you ask for jokes, and reply with wit to questions like “Hey Cortana, are you single” (to which she replies that she has no algorithms for love).

Availability

The phone can be found in Acer stores and kiosks, which are located in various malls in the Philippines.

With features that rival other smartphones twice, or even thrice its price, the M220 is definitely good value for your money, a phone that’s really for anyone and everyone.
