Philips to Pinoys: Save Energy Now using the right LEDs

What would life be without electricity?

Chaos.

That’s why Philips has launched a campaign called #MayMagagawaKa to educate the Filipinos on how to save energy by replacing their home lighting with LED, the right LED.

“A power outage can be catastrophic for the economy,” said Fabia Tetteroo-Bueno, Country Manager of Philips Philippines, during the campaign launch on Wednesday. “We lose the comfort our homes and the stability of livelihood and business.”

The campaign #MayMagagawaKa is a joint project organized by Philips, Deutsche Investitions – und Entwicklungsgesellscsaft mbH (DEG) Bank, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines, and the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP), seeks to rise awareness and build urgency or energy conservation in the country.

The campaign come on the heels of the Malampaya maintenance shutdown — which left a 700-megawatt void in the local power grid and renewed the mounting calls for energy conservation in the country.

“When it comes to power interruptions, it affects the quality of power and disrupts business”, said Henry Schumacher, Executive Vice President of ECCP.

Lighting matters

In the Philippines, Tetteroo-Bueno emphasized, the lack of LED product standards have led to proliferation of substandard units i nthe market. She added, “These units compromise efficiency and safety.”

Out of P1,000 spent on electricity bill monthly, approximately P200 goes to lighting. Now, if your lights are LED, the P200 could become P30, giving you the savings of P170 said Bueno during the press conference.

Putting the light on awareness

To help promote the cause, the Philips #MayMagagawaKa campaign partnered with graphic design studio Team Manila to create three limited-edition shirt designs.

Campaign supporters can get the shirt for free with every purchase of Philips LED lights in participating stores. They will also be given away as exclusive prizes in an on-going Facebook contest in the Philips PH Facebook page for Philips’ annual switch-off event for Earth Hour with WWF.

To reach a bigger audience, Philips will reach out to Local Government Units for a series of barangay-level activities dedicated to promoting the cause.
