PLDT is spending P1.3B for an upgrade of its Fiber network this year. Scheduled to be finished by November, the biggest telco in the country which has long partnership with Ciena will upgrade its Fiber Network into 100Gigabit.
“With this upgrade, PLDT will be able to add significant bandwidth scalablility, reliability and intelligence to its network infra. This upgrade will complete PLDT’s core network modernization program and will the delivery of next-gen services such as Fiber-to-home, fiber-to-building, LTE, IPTV and triple play” said PLDT President and CEO Napoleon L. Nazareno.
This upgrade will to 100G fiber network infrastruction will make PLDT to be the first in the Philippines to deploy 1000G which will extract more capacity out of its existing fiber and support the delivery of the high-bandwidth services and apps. PLDT will also be the first network operator in the country to deploy Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform with Wavelogic coherent optical technology, integrated ROADM and OTN switching.
OTN or Optical Transport Network is a next-generation industry-standard network protocol that provides for the efficient transport of multiple types of legacy, real-time and Ethernet traffic over a converged optical network. ROADM or reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer is a device that can add, block, pass or redirect modulated infrared (IR) and visible light beams of various wavelenghts in a fiber network; it is used in systems that employ wavelength division multiplexing.
PLDT is also deploying Ciena’s OneControl Unified Management System for centralized and multilayer network management.
With this tech upgrade, PLDT will be at par with the telcos in our neighboring countries like Singapore and Korea.
