13 years ago, Pantech unveiled the first phone to feature a fingerprint sensor

Fingerprint recognition is very pleasing to use on many smartphones today, especially the iPhone models. During the past years, fingerprint sensor became more faster and accurate to read. However, the Apple iPhone is the first handset to sport a Touch ID and that will be a significant impact in mobile phone industry.

Last 2004, Pantech introduced the first “fingerprint recognition” device in the market, the Gl100. At that time, the said feature is used for lock-in keys and memory dials. It also controls the personalized key entries and can be used in gaming such as car racing, instead of operating the keys around the sensor.

The design is an unusual 1.8-inch TFT screen and a secondary 1.2-inch, also with TFT screen. Talking about the optics, the phone has a 1.3-megapixel lens that can capture 15 frame shots and can zoom at 10X. The video can shoot up to 30 minutes only.

For the battery, there’s a removable 780 mAh capacity with 200 hours of standby time and 3 hours of talk time. If the phone has low battery, a notification LED light in the external screen will lighten and blink.
