Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) is leading the way in eSIM adoption in the Philippines by allowing prepaid subscribers to switch to an eSIM without losing their number. This service is the first of its kind for prepaid customers in the country.

The eSIM, or embedded SIM, is the digital version of a physical SIM card. It provides a convenient and efficient way for users to access data, call, and text services without needing to insert a physical SIM card. Managing, activating, transferring, and securing an eSIM is much simpler compared to a physical SIM card.

“Now, Smart Prepaid subscribers may upgrade their physical SIM to an eSIM for only Php99 by simply presenting their physical SIM and any valid government ID at the nearest Smart Store,” said Lloyd R. Manaloto, Head of Prepaid at Smart.

“On the other hand, non-Smart subscribers can switch their physical SIM into a Smart Prepaid eSIM for FREE by obtaining their Unique Subscriber Code from their current network provider, and submitting the required documents – such as a valid government ID, a screenshot of their current balance, and a signed application form, among others – to the nearest Smart Store,” he added.

Smart Signature subscribers and Smart Infinity members can easily upgrade to an eSIM by visiting any Smart Store. Conversely, non-Smart postpaid customers can switch to a Smart Postpaid eSIM by obtaining their Unique Subscriber Code from their current network provider and submitting the necessary documents to the nearest Smart Store.

What is eSIM

For context, the eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card that is integrated into a device, removing the necessity for a physical SIM card. This technology allows users to easily switch between mobile networks without the hassle of physically changing SIM cards.

Smart Communications introduced its eSIM in July 2023, representing a major achievement as the initial prepaid eSIM option in the Philippines. This move transformed the telecommunications industry in the nation by presenting customers with a modern and digital substitute for conventional SIM cards.
