Sharp Aquos S2 to feature 4K bezel-less screen and on-screen fingerprint scanner

The near bezel-less display on many smartphones are quite interesting in mainstream today. Sharp was the first to introduced the bezel-less screen, with Aquos Crystal way back 2014 and the Oppo R7.

Speaking of the latter, Sharp will continue to release such feature with the upcoming phone, the Sharp Aquos S2.

According to the leaked images, the unannounced smartphone is expected to have a dual camera setup at the back, in vertical pattern to be precise and its physical design will come in a metal frame and a glass back panel. The accompanying dual LED flash is located below the cameras.

Another image, that has been uploaded in Weibo, a Chinese counterpart of Twitter, showing the front display of the phone, as well as the embedded fingerprint sensor under the screen. It will become the first ever smartphone to have this kind of feature. However, it seems that this could be a limited or special edition only, but will be the company’s first full-screen smartphone to take a global launch.

On the other hand, KGI Securites analyst said that Qualcomm’s fingerprint underneath the screen may not be ready for mass production. Mr. Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst from KGI Securities revealed that they might release the said feature next year due to the following risks:

  • if the on-screen fingerprint sensor will have a fast response
  • improving the scanning ability below the screen
  • it requires thin glass cover and flexible OLED panel

Looking on the leaked specs, the Sharp Aquos S2 will sport a 4K display resolution with an aspect ratio of 18:9, similar to the flagship G6 from LG. The selfie camera is located at the top center part of the front display, on a special cutout, similar to the recently announced Essential PH-1 in the United States.

Preceding reports also stated that Sharp is also working on two bezel-less devices with model numbers – FS8010 and FS8016. “The core of full screen design is to break through the technology limit, achieve the double sense of holding and visual comfort, and provide the ultimate experience for users.” said Dr. Luo Zhongsheng, CEO of SHARP/InFocus Mobile.

The Sharp Aquos S2 (105 Limited Edition) is expected to launch tomorrow afternoon, so stay tuned for the complete features.
