Sharp finally announced their latest full-screen offering smartphone, the Aquos S2. It features a 5.5-inch screen with an impressive 87.5% screen-to-body ratio and a 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass panel for added protection. The design on the front display resembles to the U.S. counterpart, the Google Essential PH-1, most importantly, the slight special cut-out at the top where the front camera is located.
The display on the device is built on a Free-Form Display (FFD), an innovative IGZO technology that enables the screen to be cut into any shape. Moreover, it provides higher light transmissivity and increased “on-display” circuit integration.
There’s a vertical dual-camera setup at the back, one with 12-megapixel lens with f/1.7 aperture and the other, an 8-megapixel sensor, with PDAF and dual-LED flash. The latter is the one who will take the responsibility for the background blur of an image. The front camera is also an 8-megapixel sensor. A fingerprint scanner is situated on the home screen by not using any pressure. With 3.6 mm, it set the record for narrowest fingerprint identification module in the world.
Under the hood, the Sharp Aquos S2 uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 SoC, clocks at 2.2Ghz using Cortex-A53 and remains the first and only smartphone to used this kind of processor. It comes with base 64GB storage. Up to 256GB if you’re using a microSD card which can be found on the hybrid second SIM slot. It can support up to X9 LTE modem. Other connectivity includes: Quick Charge 3.0, USB Type-C 3.1 connector and the new Bluetooth 5.0.
Looking at the image above, the Sharp Aquos S2 will come in a high-end version, using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset, paired with a larger 128GB storage and 6GB RAM. However, it doesn’t have the mint green version. The said variant uses a “3D” single-sheet glass on the rear, giving its curved edges around the corner and a molded camera bump for more stylish looking. Adding to its stunning appearance, the Sharp logo is carved at the bottom part.
