15+ Things to know more about MIUI 9 and when will it be released?

The latest version MIUI 9 has just recently announced by Chinese phone maker Xiaomi last July 26, with the theme “lightning fast“. According to Lei Jun, the company’s CEO since 2010, “the MIUI 9 will be smoother, more stable and powerful“. It will offer the best user experience, as developers had put so much time to finish its system optimization. Now, here are some cool, handy and interesting features about the said system and what are their purposes.

Smart Assistant

This is an alternative of the Google Assistant, but currently, it is available on China ROM only. It can be access by swiping the home screen to right. Users may able to put shortcut apps for easy access by using Quick Card for some information and frequently used applications in just one click. Not just that, you can also jot down a note for important reminders, notes, events and more.

Instant App

By using the Instant App, users are allow to run their favorite applications without installing it. On a positive side, the company is eagerly working on many third party apps to support this feature.

Smart App Launcher

This feature will analyze on what the user is doing on the application to make recommendations on which app the user may open it. It offers easier switching to other apps that the user may use without going to the home-screen.

Simpler Home Screen Editing

In the home screen, the editing section is now revamped for simpler and easier use. On the MIUI 8, it was not easy to move apps to another screen. But, on the MIUI 9, If the user will select the apps, the preview of the pages is now showing in the bottom of the screen and it can drag and drop apps to the proper screen easily.

Image search

It is a search engine in the Gallery App where you will distinguish all the images by typing in keywords. It also helps to find text in photos and screenshots! Amazing, isn’t it?

Accelerated Startup of Apps

The launch time of opening the apps is now easier and faster as the company achieves this kind of impressive feature by using optimized haptic feedback, intelligent CPU acceleration, and optimized thread scheduling.

New themes and icons

On the previous version, a black or white border around the icons are very noticeable, but now, it has been removed. Added to this feature is the eliminating of the squarish shape of the icon. Below the images are the four themes on the MIUI 9..

Picture in Picture Mode

The user grant to view multimedia in a small special window (a.k.a. “suspended window”) at the top of the display without deploying the main application that the user is currently using. It also allow to move the window in any direction without affecting the playback on the video.

Split Screen

Also known as the “multi-window”. It allows the user to display two apps in one screen. Note that not all apps are compatible in this feature. The split screen feature must be enabled by tapping the menu button and after that, the user must see the Recents screen. At the top left, there is a Split Screen mode button. Click on that button then put the first app to be added into the first portion, then drag it into the first portion. This has same option on the second app that the user will choose.

Controls and Gestures (TBI)

Some smartphones today are now implementing this kind of feature, for example, swiping three fingers will take a screenshot, to activate search, user may swipe up. It can be customize in the settings.



Silent and DND Mode

On the MIUI 9, the user can now switch between silent and Do Not Disturb mode in one click. To recall, the silent mode will mute all the alerts, calls and notification; however, in Do Not Disturb Mode, it will automatically turn on: 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours or 8 hours are the choices.


The messaging app on the MIUI 9 has been changed, adding to the feature are the today, yesterday and earlier header for easily seeing the transactions. They also introduced notification group that will identify and group SMS for verification code together.

Notification filter

The new smart notification filter hides some non-essential notifications in it so that you will see only important notifications in the notification panel. By default, the notification filter automatically filters by itself and if you want to hide some app notifications or push notifications, just swipe on the notification from the right side of the screen, and then you will see an Unimportant button for that notification and tapping on it will show a dialog box as shown below:

Pressing on the unimportant button in the above dialog, the notification will be added to the Unimportant App Notification list of the Smart Notification filter and the notifications from that app will now be shown in the notification fold. And if you want to see the notifications from the unimportant apps, tap on the Smart notification folder and it will open the unimportant notifications as you can see the screenshot image below.

If you accidentally added an app to the smart notification filter or to the list of unimportant notification list, just swipe from right to left in the notification in the unwanted list and tap on the important button and confirm it again. Afterwards, the app is now excluded from the unnecessary notification list. Please see image below for your reference:

Display File Transfer Speed

On the File Explorer app, if you would like to transfer some files like songs, videos, apps or documents, the real time transfer speed will now show, both copying or moving a file.

Lock Screen Shortcuts

The revamped lock screen of the MIUI 9 gives a simpler way of gaining access to flashlight and other useful shortcuts. Swiping from left of the screen to the right side will get the torch, Mi Home, Mi Remote and Mi Pay. Take note that this will be different in the Global ROM.

One-Tap Login

Remember Facebook? Previously, you’ll need to put the username or e-mail and the password whenever you want to open your account but later on, you will just click your profile picture to enter. This scenario is now introduced to MIUI 9. Whenever you want to open your Mi Account, you’ll see a prompt to use one-tap login instead of entering your email or phone number and password.

Revamped and Simplified Features

According to the listing of features, the MIUI 9 has been increased in size and some unneeded features are gone, including Child Mode, WiWide (provides public wifi networks to stores and restaurants in China), Contact Card, Showtime (Caller Profile Video), etc.

NOTE: The features included in MIUI 9 China ROM and Global ROM might be different. Some features are ONLY available in China. Kindly stay tuned for the stable Global ROM rollout.
