A real macho pick up by Mazda; The BT-50 test drive

The Mazda pickup truck Mazda BT 50 will be very memorable for me and my fiancée, Amor.

Mazda Philippines allowed us to bring the Mazda BT 50 for a test drive on September 4 to 6, 2015.

The significant date would be September 5, 2015, as this is the day I proposed to Amor. (Of course she said yes, haha!)

On September 3, I told Amor if she likes to visit Bicol again. (She has been there twice since we became couple). I told her, she can invite her mountaineering friends to come with us. Three of her close friends agreed.

The Mazda BT 50 is the vehicle I used to bring Amor and her friends in Daraga, Albay, and there I proposed to her.

The Mazda BT 50 Truck

Locally we call it pick-up. In western countries, they call it truck because it gives you the performance of a truck. The Mazda BT-50 has a diesel engine. The one the was loaned to us has an automatic transmission with a 4 x 4 capability. It has dual cab allowing about four more passengers at the back.

Performance and economy

I’d give the BT 50 a high score of 8/10 here. While it is huge and heavy, it provides comfort in driving it even off road. In the highway, you will feel really superior because of its height. It can go super fast from zero when you hit the gas. I was surprised that it was performing like the engine is not diesel-powered.

From Makati to Daraga (Cagsawa Ruins), I only consume half tank of diesel. That is around 455 kilometers ride. And I was not slowing down because I want to test it to the limit.

I reached a 150km/hr top speed in the Rolando Andaya highway, the bypass road that connects Quezon province and Bicol Region. When you take this highway, you are skipping Daet, Camarines Norte which will save you more than an hour drive.

Cabin space and comfort

The Mazda BT 50 front seats are comfortable. The leg rooms are designed for long-legged drivers, but the extra cab has limited space.

Ride and handling

This is a truck, so you don’t expect for a sweet ride with the Mazda BT-50. I had a slight body pain as soon as we reached Cagsawa Ruins in Daraga Albay.  But I’d like to highlight that those bumpy roads along the highway are nothing to this monster. When I am driving a sedan, I’d slow down to prepare for rough roads, but with the BT-50, roads are all the same. The 4 x 4 feature is activated by a switch button. It compliments the automatic transmission very well. That means handling can be convenient without the old school mechanical processes.

On the highways, rough roads, and more so with off roads, the BT-50 will take care of you.

The BT-50 is a utility truck. It is best utilized if you are transporting heavy loads of goods or items. The truck bed requires a cover though if you are putting your luggage there.

Diesel consumption

From Makati to Daraga which is 455 kilometers. And then from Ligao City to back to Makati which is around 443.8 kilometers, we only spent one full tank of diesel.

Surprisingly, the Mazda BT-50 is very fuel efficient. On my usual road trip to the same destination, I would fill the tank twice and add up a few more before I reach my parking area in Makati.

  1. Wow, I own a BT50 the 2.2MT variant and I was able to do 160kph at NLEX and meron pang ibabaon ang silinyador 🙂 Anyway, I really love this truck, got it way back July 2013 and had the badge of TOTY, I dunno if it was 2012 when they had that award. I was even torn between this and Chevys offering, good thing I chose this, dami ko ng nakitang Chevy Colorado bagong bagong lumalangitngit

  2. We’ve tried the Ford XLT on the same route in the blog post.. The BT50 is tougher than the XLT. I don’t know if is compared to the Wildtrak.
