In its most recent study, Ookla, the world leader in mobile and broadband network analytics, confirmed that PLDT’s wireless arm, Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), had once again won the Philippines’ Fastest and Best Mobile Network Award.

Smart broke another record by winning Ookla’s Best Mobile Network award for the reporting period of Q3-Q4 2022, after previously setting a precedent as the first and only Filipino mobile operator to receive the award for Q1-Q2 2022.

Smart has won both the Fastest Mobile Network and Best Mobile Coverage awards from Ookla for the same reporting periods.

This is a rare and impressive feat.

“These awards continue to inspire us to innovate and deliver leveled-up services to our customers across the country, in our quest to power their increasingly digital lifestyles, foster meaningful connections, and become the telco that our subscribers can truly count on,” said Emmanuel C. Lorenzana, PLDT Chief Transformation & Customer Advisor.

When compared to its nearest competitors, Smart’s median download speed of 31.04 Mbps and median upload speed of 6.8 Mbps easily outpaced their respective medians of 20.22 Mbps and 5.13 Mbps, respectively, to claim first place in this area.

With a Coverage Score of 795, Smart was also rated highest in the category of “Best Mobile Coverage,” where it easily bested the competition’s Coverage Score of 757. According to Ookla, a provider’s Coverage Score reflects both the breadth of its service area (its “footprint”) and the consistency of that service’s quality.

For the Fastest Mobile Network award, over 2.9 million user-initiated tests were used, while for the Coverage Award, over 3.4 million scan counts were used.

According to Ookla’s report, Smart is the Fastest Mobile Network in three of the country’s most important cities: Quezon City, Cebu City, and Davao City.

“Speedtest Awards, presented by Ookla, are an elite designation reserved for the fastest and top-performing fixed broadband and mobile operators around the world.” It is our pleasure to present Smart with the award for Fastest Mobile Network, Best Coverage which gives Smart a high accolade of Best Mobile Network in the Philippines. This recognition is testament to their exceptional performance in Q3-Q4 2022 based on Ookla’s rigorous analysis of consumer-initiated tests taken with Speedtest” said Doug Suttles, CEO at Ookla.

The combined fixed and mobile networks of PLDT and Smart are the foundation for such high performance. To far, Smart has installed 77,200 base stations across the country, including 7,300 5G base stations and nearly 40,000 4G/LTE base stations. Over 97% of the world’s population can access 3G, LTE, or 5G on Smart’s network. It is supported by the largest fiber network in the country, which as of the end of September covered more than 1.09 million kilometers of international and local fiber.
