Official pricing and availability

The SuperD D1 official SRP is P11,990 and it will be available thru MyPhone Online Store and in Lazada as well.

Design & build

By merely looking at the physical features of the Super D D1, there is no special thing that identifies that device as a 3D smartphone. It has a nice build with a hard high-quality plastic on the back completing the unibody design of the device. D1 has the standard placement of the buttons with the volume rocker and power button placed on the right side.

Turn it over and you will see the SIM tray which has dual hybrid capabilities. A nano SIM is required in this device and both are 4G/LTE enabled. The second slot, however, may be used as microSD expansion up to 128G.

On top, you have the usual 3.5mm audio jack and on the opposite side is the microUSB port and a noise-cancelling mic.

Display & UI

The full HD display of the Super D D1 adds more vibrance to the 3D content viewing on the device. It has clear and bright display and we observed no viewing angle issue during our hands-on. There is also a Gorilla Glass 3 and 2.5D curved glass for added protection to the device.

The main camera of the Super D D1 has 13 MP f/2.2 Samsung S5K3L8 sensor w/ AF and LED flash. This has become a standard in today’s smartphone which takes decent photo for social media consumption.

There are two (2) cameras in the front but, this is not for the selfie functionality. The primary 8MP is the one that takes your usual selfie and groupie shots while the 2MP camera us used to track the eye of the viewer. This enables the smarpthone to deliver 3D content without the aid of a 3D glass anymore.

The front camera has 8 MP f/2.0 OV8856 sensor + 2 MP eye tracking camera.

The 3D Experience

The 3D technology on smartphone is not something new. It has been tried by other brands before, but Super D is confident that it will click on the consumer. To support this, they have created a community where you can download or subscribe for your 3D content. The essential apps like the 3D Viewer is already pre-installed.

The naked-eye 3D experience is immersive but we can’t just capture it either on video or photo. It must be experienced first hand. We can make “kwento” only, so to speak.

The 3D viewing is for one person consumption only. Add another person to watch the conten and he will see a blurry video, becaue the eye-tracking camera tracks only the eyes of the first person viewing it.

To make your 3D viewing experience complete, MyPhone is throwing a free SuperD VR ZERO headgear worth P1,000 for the first 1,000 buyers. There are two colors available, red or yellow.

Our initial thoughts

The technology is no longer enticing. We’ve seen the 3D technology on a bigger screen and it did not sell so much to the consumer. I know because we have 3D-enabled TV but we never used it.  Yes, the experience is rich and immersive, but not all people are used to 3D content. For example, a friend of mine gets dizzy after few minutes of viewing a 3D movie.

Second of all is the price. I’ve seen how people reacted on the price point of the SuperD D1. The SRP of P11,990 is too expensive already. Many would even get the popular OPPO F1s, vivo V5, Huawei GR5 2017 and many others with a better performance.

Lastly, MyPhone is known for the sub-P5k smartphones. The buying Pinoy turned their back a few years ago when they priced one of their phones more than P10,000.

What if they change the pricing to just, let’s say, P7,999? Well, the ball game might change. But we are just dreaming here. We can’t speculate so much because, remember, the Super D D1, isn’t a MyPhone device. It is a result of a partnership with the SuperD brand.

SuperD D1 Preview

We are hoping to get a review unit soon so that we can do a thorogh test on the SuperD D1. We will post our hands-on video also in our YouTube channel, so watch out for that.
