Android 4.4 is codenamed Kitkat; Have a break!

Drumroll please to the latest Android OS, version 4.4 is officially codenamed Kitkat. Yummy!

Contrary to earlier reports, the next version of the famous OS from Google will not be Key Lime Pie, but Kitkat! The former name was used only as a secret name before the guys from Google finally revealed the new name in partnership with Nestle.

Android-Kitkat

Apparently the Google peeps are really sweet proof is the naming convention of the Android versions which started with Cupcake. Your current Android smartphone may have the 4.2 version which is code named Jelly Bean.

Here’s the historical background of the Android naming convention used by Google.

Android1.5-cupcake
Cupcake release date is September 30, 2009.

Android1.6-Donut
Donut was released in September 15, 2009.

Android2-Eclair
Eclair was released the following month, October 26, 2009.

Android2.2-Froyo
Froyo was released in May 10, 2010.

Android2.3-Gingerbread
Gingerbread was first released in December 6, 2010, another update was released in February 9, 2011.

Android3.0-Honeycomb
Honeycomb was made available in May 10, 2011 and updated in July 15, 2011.

Android4.0-ICS
ICS was made public in December 16, 2011.

Android4.1-JB
JB which the current OS for most Android smartphones had three versions. First released in July 9, 2012, another was in November 13, 2012 and the latest was in July 24, 2013.

Android4.4-Kitkat
Finally, Android 4.4 aka Kitkat will be released this October 2013.

Marc Vanlerberghe, director of Android Marketing, said the name was chosen because Kit Kat bars have been a “favorite go-to snack among the team since the early days of Android.” [S]
