How to Use Your iPod Touch Like an iPhone

Above Article Content Ad

The iPhone is a fantastic product, but you will have probably noticed that it is a lot more expensive than the very similar iPod Touch. In fact, one of the only real differences between the devices is that the iPod Touch does not have the ability to connect to a network and make calls.

However, there are a few tricks that you can take advantage of to make your iPod Touch work in a similar way to an iPhone, which could help you to save a small fortune.

Download a Free VOIP App
The first thing that you will need to do is download a VOIP app to your iPod Touch. There are many of these to choose from, and they all allow you to use an internet connection to make calls for free or for very low prices.

One of the most popular is Skype, which is great for making simple free calls to other Skype users, and you can also make video calls over it. With Skype, you can also make low-cost international calls, and you can buy a phone number so people can contact you using a standard number.

There are other VOIP apps available, such as Fring and Line2, which allow you to do similar things, although some of them provide more features than Skype.

Try some of these out before you decide to sell your iPod Touch and invest in an iPhone because they may be all that you need rather than investing in a whole new device.

Make Sure You Have a Wi-Fi Connection
You do not have a data connection like 3G on your iPod Touch, which means when out and about it will be harder to use your iPod Touch. However, if you have Wi-Fi at home then you can use it as a very efficient home phone.

Alternatively, try to locate some Wi-Fi hotspots in your local area where you know you can pick up a signal. Many cafés and bars now provide free Wi-Fi, so make sure you know where a few of these are in your area and you can then use them to make and receive calls completely free.

You may even want to consider joining up with a Wi-Fi hotspot provider. The amount you use the network to pick up Wi-Fi signals could more than make up for the price you pay.

Invest in a Headset
If you don’t want to talk on speakerphone all the time then you will have to invest in a headset. This is not a requirement, but it is a lot more convenient if you decide to use your iPod Touch as a phone on a regular basis.

Enjoy a Cheaper iPhone by Converting Your iPod Touch
If you follow the above tips, you may not want be able to get the full versatility of the iPhone, but you will be able to use your iPod Touch like a phone more of the time. It may not be the best option for you, but if you love iOS devices but don’t want to splash out on an iPhone then it could be worth experimenting with it.
