Redmi 5A Unboxing

Inside the retail box of the Redmi 5A are all-white accessories: wall charger, microUSB cable, in-ear headphones, user guide and warranty card.

Design & Build Quality

The Redmi 5A should be the role model of all brands selling in the mass market. It has a well-built construction with a metallic finish on a plastic material.

It may have an “older” design, but it presents itself in a very decent way. There are no sharp edges and it is very nice to hold in the hands.

Buttons are ergonomically positioned as well. The power button and the one-piece volume rocker is on the right, while the SIM trays are on the left.

There are also two separate card slots, the first one houses a single nano SIM and the other one has microSD and another nano SIM.  This feature makes you maximize the usage of two (2) SIM cards and the much-needed additional external storage.

Display & Media

This “entry-level king” has a 5-inch IPS HD (1280 x 720) display. There are a noticeable black border and a not so slim bezel as well.

Despite having a small display, images and videos are displayed clear and bright. There is no viewing angle issue as well.

What might be an issue to most users are the capacitive buttons that don’t have a backlight. It will be a little bit challenging to memorize which one is the back button or the menu button.

Software, UI & Apps

Out of the box, the Redmi 5A has Android 7.1 Nougat with Xiaomi’s own UI called MIUI version 9. As expected, you’ll see “unwanted” apps that are pre-installed. This will result in a little amount of storage left of about 7.1GB out of the 16G ROM.

Expect the Google Suite to be pre-installed, but Xiaomi also included Microsoft Apps as well, plus the Xiaomi preferred apps. Luckily, you can uninstall the ones that you don’t need.

Performance & Benchmarks

Under the hood of this device is a 1.4GHz 64-bit quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chipset with Adreno 308 GPU. There is also a 2GB RAM to assist you in multi-tasking roles.

Antutu gave Redmi 5A a score of 43,924.

Also, there is no gyroscope present in this device. Don’t ask for more because it is one of the cheapest devices in town today.

Camera

Equipped with a 13MP f/2.2 PDAF main camera with LED flash, this device takes photos quite well in a well-lighted environment. Here are the samples.

Connectivity, Audio Quality & Battery life

Connectivity-wise, we observed that the Redmi 5A has a weak antenna reception. Our Globe postpaid SIM would encounter casual disconnection. However, WiFi connectivity is strong.

Battery life is outstanding, our test gave us almost 10 hours using PC Mark app. Standby mode is commendable as well, it can last more than 2 days.

Audio quality is clear and crisp as well.

Verdict

It is not a perfect device. We can’t say that it is an entry level king, but it has an outstanding quality in some aspects. At the current price of only P4,390, this is the best buy budget device.

The Redmi 5A has an IR blaster, a feature we already missed for a while. It has a tandem Mi Remote app which works best in our test with our LG smart TV.

The camera did not give us outstanding images, but it can give you decent photos when a good lighting condition is present.

PROSCONS
Good build
Mediocre camera
Affordable
Long battery life
