Overview

Honor Philippines is making quite a stir in the mobile phone market in the Philippines. After the HONOR X9a 5G became a social media sensation, HONOR made another 5G phone that tech fans will surely be interested in.

Launched at the Luxury Resort in Bataan, the Honor 90 5G is the newest smartphone known for its 200MP flagship camera. It only costs P24,990, a very reasonable price for a smartphone with such a good camera.

The back of the Honor 90 5G has four cameras: a 200MP primary camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, a 2MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth sensor. The primary camera can take stunning pictures with great detail and clarity.

The Honor 90 5G also has a 50MP selfie camera on the front of the phone.

A first in the local scene is the industry-leading PWM dimming feature of the Honor 90 5G.

The Honor 90 is equipped with industry-leading 3840Hz PWM dimming technology, which allows the display to pulse on and off at a very high frequency. This eliminates the flickering effect that can be seen on some shows at lower brightness levels, making the viewing experience more comfortable and less fatiguing for the eyes. The Honor 90 has received the TÜV Rheinland Flicker Free Certification, which means that it has been tested and certified to be safe for use, even for extended periods of time. This makes it an excellent choice for people who watch videos, play games, or read on their smartphones.

Here are some additional details about PWM dimming:

  • PWM stands for Pulse Width Modulation. It is a technique used to control the brightness of a display by rapidly turning the pixels on and off.
  • The higher the PWM frequency, the less noticeable the flickering effect.
  • The Honor 90’s 3840 Hz PWM dimming frequency is one of the highest available, making it one of the most comfortable displays at low brightness levels.
  • The TÜV Rheinland Flicker Free Certification is a rigorous testing standard that ensures a display is safe for use, even for extended periods.

You can refer to the test we discussed in this Facebook post on the Tech Patrol FB page.

Design

Tech Patrol was able to get hold of the Honor 90 5G review unit as early as the second week of July. We tested it during EPSON’s Fusion 14 held in El Nido, Palawan.

The Honor 90 has a unique design. Diamond grid patterns on the back differ from most smartphones’ shiny, gradient designs. The diamond grid patterns are made of a shiny material that reflects light, making the phone look more luxurious. They are also slightly raised, giving the phone a more textured feel. The shiny silver back panel is made of a metal material that is also durable and scratch-resistant.

USB-C Speaker and SIM Tray

The Honor 90 has a minimalist design with a sturdy plastic back. It is finished in Diamond Silver, the best-looking color (other colors include Peacock Blue with a splash of greens and yellows in different hues, Emerald Green with an elegant shade of jade, and the classic Midnight Black).

The volume rocker and power button on the right side

The phone is big but not bulky, measuring 7.8mm thick and weighing 183g.

It is easy to use with one hand. The power and volume buttons are easily accessible and have a nice tactile feel. The USB-C port, loudspeaker, and dual-sim card slot are at the bottom.

Dual-SIM + eSIM capable

Display

The Honor 90 5G display is an OLED panel and measures 6.7 inches in size. It also has support for HDR10+.

The blacks are rich, and the colors are bright and brilliant. The display is also curved, but not to the extent that it will cause your hands to mistakenly press one of the buttons.

The display’s refresh rate is 120 Hz, contributing to its silky smoothness and quick response times.

The Honor 90 5G is an excellent device for viewing videos and enjoying gaming.

The 120 Hz refresh rate gives the impression that everything flows smoothly, complementing the display’s size and clarity.

You can also use the Honor 90 5G to watch multiple episodes in a row of your favorite shows or series without experiencing any latency.

The Honor 90 5G is the first smartphone in the world with risk-free dimming eye protection. It has a 3840 Hz ultra-high-frequency PWM dimming technology that protects against eye strain and fatigue. The screen can go as bright as 1600 nits and supports HDR10+ for a better viewing experience.

The Honor 90 5G has a punch-hole notch for the front camera and slim bezels.
